How to calculate your arcana number

All you need is your birth date and a minute of simple addition.

1

Write your date as digits

Write the month, day, and full year as plain digits. March 15, 1990 becomes 0, 3, 1, 5, 1, 9, 9, 0.

2

Add every digit

Add them all together, one digit at a time. For March 15, 1990 the total is 28.

3

Reduce anything above 22

If the total is above 22, add its digits again until it is 22 or less. 22 is The Fool.

Worked example: March 15, 1990
0 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0=28→2 + 8=10· Wheel of Fortune

28 is above 22, so 2 + 8 = 10, which is Wheel of Fortune.

1The Magician · Iwill · skill · beginnings

Your core pattern is the move from idea to action. You notice what is already on the table, gather the right tools, and make something real out of it, often faster than the people around you expect.

Lesson: Choose one thing and carry it all the way through. Your talent is real, but it only counts when you let it be tested by follow-through.

2The High Priestess · IIintuition · stillness · inner knowing

Much of what matters to you happens below the surface. You take in more than you say, trust what you sense before you can explain it, and tend to understand people and situations long before you have the words for them.

Lesson: Let what you know reach the world. Intuition grows more trustworthy when you voice it, act on it, and check it against what actually happens.

3The Empress · IIInurture · abundance · creativity

At the heart of your pattern is the urge to make things grow. Relationships, gardens, projects, and the people you love tend to flourish under your attention, and you feel most like yourself when you are creating comfort and beauty around you.

Lesson: Tend yourself with the same patience you offer others. Abundance lasts when you receive as well as give, and when you let what you raised stand on its own.

4The Emperor · IVstructure · authority · stability

Order is how you show care. When things feel chaotic, you are the one who sets the plan, draws the boundaries, and takes responsibility, and people often look to you without being asked because you seem steady under pressure.

Lesson: Strength includes flexibility. Lead by building structures that others can help shape, and let people see the person behind the role you play.

5The Hierophant · Vtradition · learning · belonging

Shared wisdom runs through your pattern. You value what has been tested by time, learn best inside a clear framework, and often end up as the person who explains how things work and passes that knowledge on to others.

Lesson: Keep the traditions that still serve you and question the ones that only feel safe. Your own lived experience is a valid teacher too.

6The Lovers · VIchoice · connection · values

Relationships are the main stage of your life, and so are the choices they bring. You come alive through close connection, and many of your turning points arrive as a decision between two paths, two people, or two versions of yourself.

Lesson: Choose from your values, not from the fear of disappointing anyone. A decision made honestly is better than a perfect one that never gets made.

7The Chariot · VIIdrive · direction · willpower

Movement defines your pattern. Once you set a goal you push toward it with unusual force, pulling competing feelings and responsibilities into line so they all point the same way, and you tend to feel restless whenever life stands still.

Lesson: Check the direction as often as the speed. Real control comes from knowing why you are going somewhere, not just how fast you can arrive.

8Strength · VIIIcourage · patience · compassion

Quiet strength is the thread through your life. You handle difficult people, strong emotions, and hard seasons not by force but by staying gentle and steady, and others often realize only later how much you were carrying.

Lesson: Gentleness includes yourself. Let your courage show up as honest limits, and accept help without feeling that it makes you weaker.

9The Hermit · IXsolitude · reflection · wisdom

Answers tend to come to you when you are alone. Time away from noise is not a luxury for you but a necessity, and the insight you gather in quiet often becomes the guidance other people come looking for.

Lesson: Bring the lantern back down the mountain. Wisdom is meant to be shared, and connection will teach you things that solitude cannot.

10Wheel of Fortune · Xcycles · luck · turning points

Life tends to move for you in clear chapters. Sudden changes, lucky breaks, and abrupt endings show up more often than for most, and your path is shaped as much by how you respond to timing as by careful planning.

Lesson: You cannot control the wheel, but you can choose how you stand on it. Notice which patterns repeat, and act when the opening comes.

11Justice · XIfairness · truth · accountability

A strong sense of fairness sits at your core. You notice imbalance quickly, want decisions to be honest and reasoned, and feel uneasy until things are set right, whether in a contract, a friendship, or your own conduct.

Lesson: Accountability works best with mercy. Own your choices, make repairs where you can, and leave room for the fact that people, including you, are still learning.

12The Hanged Man · XIIsurrender · pause · new perspective

Your life often asks you to wait. Plans stall, detours appear, and just when you feel stuck you see the situation from a completely different angle, which tends to be where your most important insights come from.

Lesson: Use the pause on purpose. When you feel stuck, ask what the situation is showing you, then make a clear choice instead of drifting.

13Death · XIIIendings · transformation · renewal

Endings shape you more than beginnings, and this card speaks of transformation rather than literal loss. Your life tends to move through clean breaks and deep changes, and each time you let something go, a truer version of you has room to come through.

Lesson: Let endings be complete before you rush into the next thing. What you release with care leaves space for something that genuinely fits.

14Temperance · XIVbalance · moderation · healing

Blending is your gift and your method. You find the middle way between people, ideas, and needs, and you tend to work slowly and carefully, mixing things until the proportions feel right rather than forcing a quick result.

Lesson: Balance is something you keep adjusting, not something you hold perfectly. Take a clear side when it matters, and trust slow progress.

15The Devil · XVattachment · desire · shadow

Desire is a strong current in your life. You feel pleasure, ambition, and attraction intensely, and your growth often comes from recognizing what has a hold on you, whether a habit, a relationship, money, or an old story about yourself.

Lesson: Notice where you feel trapped and check how tight the chain really is. Freedom usually starts with naming the attachment out loud.

16The Tower · XVIupheaval · revelation · breakthrough

Sudden change is a recurring theme for you. Structures that look solid, whether jobs, beliefs, or relationships, tend to collapse quickly when they are built on something false, and each collapse clears the ground for a more honest life.

Lesson: Build on what is true from the start. Small, honest corrections made early save you from the large, painful collapses later.

17The Star · XVIIhope · healing · inspiration

Hope is your quiet engine. After hard times you tend to recover and renew, and your openness gives others a reason to believe things can get better, which is why many people with this arcana are drawn to healing, art, or helping work.

Lesson: Let hope become a practice. Share your gifts while they are still unfinished, and look after yourself so you are not giving from an empty cup.

18The Moon · XVIIIintuition · dreams · uncertainty

Your inner life is vivid and sometimes foggy. You feel moods, undercurrents, and unspoken tensions strongly, your imagination is rich, and your path tends to wind through uncertain stretches where you have to feel your way forward.

Lesson: Take the next visible step rather than solving the whole path. Check your fears against facts, and trust the kind of intuition that stays calm.

19The Sun · XIXjoy · vitality · success

Warmth and visibility run through your pattern. You have natural vitality, people are drawn to your openness, and you do your best work when you can be fully yourself, playful and unapologetic, in front of others.

Lesson: Joy does not have to be performed. Let yourself be seen on difficult days too, and share the warmth so others can shine beside you.

20Judgement · XXawakening · calling · reckoning

Wake-up calls mark your life. At key moments you look back honestly, see what really mattered, and feel called toward a larger purpose, and these reckonings often redirect your path completely, sometimes long after the events that prompted them.

Lesson: Forgive what you have outgrown and answer what calls you now. Looking back is useful only when it leads to a decision you act on.

21The World · XXIcompletion · wholeness · integration

Bringing things full circle is your pattern. You tend to finish what you start, gather many parts of life into a meaningful whole, and feel most at home when you can see the bigger picture and your place in it.

Lesson: Every ending opens the next cycle. Celebrate what you have finished, then step into the new chapter without needing it to be perfect.

22The Fool · 0beginnings · freedom · trust

When your birth date adds up to exactly 22, it lands on The Fool, card 0 and the first step of the tarot journey. Your pattern is the fresh start: you trust life enough to leap, and you learn best by trying rather than planning.

Lesson: Keep your sense of wonder and add a little care. Look before you leap, then leap, and stay long enough to see what grows.

Frequently asked questions

What is my arcana?

Your arcana is the one Major Arcana card that matches your date of birth. Add every digit of the date and reduce the total until it is 22 or less. The result points to a card from The Magician (1) to The World (21), and 22 is The Fool. Read it as a mirror, not a prediction.

What does arcana mean?

Arcana is Latin for secrets or mysteries. A tarot deck has 22 Major Arcana cards, which describe big life themes from The Fool to The World, and 56 Minor Arcana cards for everyday situations. When people say "my arcana", they usually mean the single Major Arcana card linked to their birth date.

How do I calculate my arcana number?

Write your birth date in full and add every digit. For 15 March 1990 that is 1+5+0+3+1+9+9+0 = 28. If the total is above 22, add its digits again: 2+8 = 10. Your arcana number is 10, the Wheel of Fortune. Any total of 22 or below stays as it is.

Can my arcana number be 22?

Yes. If your digits add up to exactly 22, you keep it, and 22 corresponds to The Fool. The Fool is numbered 0 in the deck, but a digit sum can never be 0, so 22 is the position that completes the cycle of 22 Major Arcana and loops back to the beginning.

Why does another calculator give me a different card?

Different calculators follow different traditions. Adding every digit of the date, as this page does, gives one card. The tarot birth card method adds the month, the day, and the two halves of the year, then reduces, giving a pair of cards. Destiny Matrix systems use the day of the month. None is wrong. They answer different questions.

Is my arcana the same as my tarot birth card?

Not always. Tarot birth cards usually come as a pair, such as the Wheel of Fortune with The Magician, while your arcana is a single card. The results can overlap because both start from the same date, but the methods differ. To see your pair, try our tarot birth card calculator.

Is the arcana number the same as a life path number?

They are related but not the same. Both start by adding the digits of your birth date. A numerology life path number keeps reducing to a single digit, or a master number such as 11 or 22, while the arcana number stops at 22 or below so it can point to one of the 22 Major Arcana cards.

Does my arcana ever change?

No. Your arcana comes from your date of birth, so it stays the same for life. What changes is how you live it. The same archetype can look very different at 20 and at 50, so it is worth rereading your card's gift, shadow, and lesson at different stages of life.
